What is Freediving to me?
I’m not quite sure yet, though I do know what I experienced while doing it. It’s been few classes I’ve done until today, but I’ve found myself really confident when it comes to freediving. I’ve been friends with the water for years now, as I’ve been scuba diving since I was 16 years old and I love it. But when it comes to freediving, it’s different. You may wonder- why? Well …if you start to think if you ever done apnea, the answer is YES.
We’ve done it even before breathing. We grow for five months in a womb, surrounded by water, protected from everything, free of worries and anything that can cross our minds. Our body is used to this. Our body is water, the whole world is water, so why not know it?
In freediving there are no limits; that’s what they told me. And I’m starting to believe they are right. Every immersion is a conversation with yourself. Not with your rational mind but with you. In every immersion you can know yourself a little bit more. What is that pushes you up? – And what is it that gives you the courage to keep going. We discover more and more each time.
Our body wants us to know that we are capable, that we are at home. Everything is fine, just do it. There is no need to breath! It’s us who think we have to breath, and when that happens, the dive is over, turn up and breath. But remember that it is just fear knocking the door. He attacks whenever he sees light. We can confront fear by listening to our body, he is the one telling us when he needs to breath.
I personal think freediving is a state of mind. A moment where relaxation is everything, the more relaxed the better, and as we are humans, and we always need to do better; we will learn to quiet our mind just to do our best. Freediving just leads you to do it. Between being relaxed, hearing nothing, looking at what nature offers, and being surrounded by water. I believe it takes us where we once were free of everything. It may be my impression, but so far I like it! And I’ll keep pushing my limits, I know I can. And there’s no best place to do it like in the water.
What is freediving to me? When I figure it out I’ll let you know.
