Cancún is an incredibly popular tourist destination for beach lovers around the world. Cancun is a city which is located in southeastern Mexico on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. Cancun has a population of around 700,000 people and is a very new developed area. In 1970, before the first hotels were built, Cancun was home to only 3 residents. They were caretakers of a coconut plantation. There were 117 people who lived nearby in Puerto Juarez which is a fishing village and military base.

Most Cancunenses people are from the Yucatan Peninsula and other Mexican States. There is also now a growing number of expats from the Americas and Europe.

For the most part, the area has been able to steer fairly clear of the violence and bloodshed which is associated with the illegal drug trade in other parts of Mexico. There are isolated incidents, however, Cancun for the most part is considered a fairly safe tourist destination.

Apart from the tourist zone, (which offers a taste of the world’s second longest barrier reef), there is also a part of the town where most Mexican residents live, a downtown area known as “El Centro.”

Cancun Airport is around 30kms south of downtown and offers flights from a large number of cities around the world.
